The morphological structure of the epidermis and dermis of the intact and basal-cell carcinoma- afflicted skin was studied by confocal laser scanning microscopy and the data of the latter and postmortem studies were comparatively assessed.
Diagnostic criteria for basal-cell carcinoma and a monitoring regimen were developed for this group of patients.
